Foundation Tips for Mature Skin

As we age, it’s important to update our makeup application techniques to account for our changing skin. As skin ages, it becomes thinner and prone to wrinkles and discoloration. To achieve a flawless, even façade becomes an increasing challenge as we attempt to hide these skin imperfections. In addition, texture due to fine lines, wrinkles, and crepe-like skin may become more noticeable when makeup is not applied with care. However, with some adjustment, you can create a beautiful, even base by following these foundation tips.

1. Prep skin with moisturizer. As we get older, the skin’s ability to retain moisture diminishes and dry skin does not fare well under foundation. Give your skin a boost of hydration by applying Climate Control after cleansing. Its unique delivery system and small molecular weight allows moisture to penetrate the skin to the deepest levels to quench dryness. As the final step in your skin care routine, apply your choice of DayTime Moisturizer to the entire face and décolletage and apply EyeLuminator to the eye area to seal in moisture all day. EyeLuminator has the added benefit of illuminating the eye area due to the addition of MakeSense® Pearlizer!

2. Fill lines with MakeSense Silk Pore & Wrinkle Minimizer. This formula helps minimize pores and fills in wrinkles to create a smoother base. Apply it in a downwards motion before foundation to prime your face, ensuring the product goes into wrinkles and fine lines. Allow the product to dry before proceeding with foundation.

3. Use a hydrating foundation formula. As previously mentioned, moisture is very important for mature skin. Give your skin an advantage by using the right type of formula. We recommend MakeSense Advanced Anti-Aging Foundation, blended with moisturizers, vitamins, and minerals, for added skin benefits. With its illuminating finish, it helps skin appear more youthful upon immediate use and provides long-term anti-aging benefits with continued use.

4. Apply cream products in thin layers. In order to prevent product from settling into fine lines and wrinkles, it is best to apply in thin layers, especially when applying over wrinkles. Start by applying MakeSense Corrective Color Concealer to hide blemishes and discoloration. Build the coverage by adding additional thin layers, concentrating product only over problem areas. Top with MakeSense Advanced Anti-Aging Formula with your choice of foundation brush. Once complete, use a damp SenseCosmetics Blender Sponge to blend for a seamless look. This step also has the added benefit of absorbing excess product for a more smooth finish.

5. Go easy on the powder. Excess powder can settle into fine line and wrinkles, magnifying these areas instead of hiding them. Avoid this issue by applying the lightest possible layer, focusing on oily areas only using Translucid Powder in Natural. Its breathable finish protects without drying skin throughout the day. Use a clean large fluffy brush to dust off any excess powder.

How to Properly Store Your Makeup Collection

senegence.jpg

Shopping for new makeup products is often more fun than organizing them. Bring order to your chaotic collection by applying these helpful strategies.

Declutter to help streamline

The first step to establishing order to your makeup mayhem is to eliminate expired or unused products. However, even if a product hasn’t reached its expiration date and you’re not using it, it’s best to give it to a friend. That way it doesn’t take up precious space in your makeup collection that could be occupied by a product you actually do use — like your arsenal of LipSense® shades.

Organize by occasion

One great way to arrange your makeup is by occasion. Place products you use on a daily basis in an accessible place. Next, group products that you rarely use into a “special occasion” category. For instance, if you tend to use  your EyeSense Shimmers only for special date nights, consider storing them in this product group.

If you have quite a few duplicate products, you might consider designating a storage space labeled “duplicates.” And don’t forget travel-sized makeup items, like our parfum travel trios. Keep rollerballs and other small products in a zip clutch so they’ll be easy to find and ready to transport on your next trip.

Sort by type

Another excellent way to store cosmetics is by type. Systematize items into categories like lip products, eye shadows, mascaras, foundations and powders. For example, group LipSense® colors, Gloss and LinerSense®Lip Liner together. You could also store BlushSense® and SeneDerm® Translucid Loose Powders together. This will save time spent fumbling through different containers or drawers when completing each stage of your makeup application.

Brushes and makeup cleaners

Don’t forget to designate a specific place for makeup brushes and cleaners. Teacups and candleholders from the dollar store or thrift store work well for storing these items. Besides brushes, these storage components can also accommodate your Brush Cleaner. And there’s a side bonus of organizing your brushes and cleaner in one prominent place: It will help you remember to wash your brushes once a week, keep them looking and feeling new for longer.

Organizing systems

How you sort cosmetics is entirely based on preference and the amount of space you have available for your collection. If your bathroom counter or vanity tabletop is tight on space, a rotating vertical organizer might work best for you. Another solution is to invest in a utility cart with three storage tiers for different product groups. If you house makeup in the bathroom medicine cabinet, try incorporating small risers to double the storage space for each shelf of the cabinet. Hanging organizers are easy to fasten to the back of a bathroom or closet door to easily compartmentalize products, too.

One thing people love about our creamy SenseCosmetics® is how easy it is to blend products together to create unique shades to use throughout their face! As trends shift, this unique characteristic makes it easy and fun to incorporate products you already own into a fresh new look! One simple way to update your look this season is by mixing MakeSense® Pearlizer (available in Original and Advanced Anti-Aging formulas) with ShadowSense® shades to create unique highlighters to accentuate your face! Here are few options to try.

senegence.jpg

Icy Pink Highlighter

Try half a pump of MakeSense Pearlizer with Pink Opal Shimmer ShadowSense and a dab of Mulberry ShadowSense for a fabulous frosty pink shade that looks great on lighter skin tones. This shimmery highlight looks fabulous when applied beneath the brow bone and inner corners of the eyes.

Lavender Highlighter

Mix one pump of MakeSense Pearlizer with Amethyst ShadowSense to create a beautiful purple highlighter that complements  medium skin tones.  Apply this shade to cheekbones and pair it with Pouty Pink BlushSense for a lovely flush of color and dimension.

 Rose Gold Highlighter

Those with deeper skin tones will look gorgeous in a highlighter made by mixing two swipes of Copper Rose Shimmer ShadowSense with half a pump of MakeSense Advanced Anti-Aging Pearlizer. This shade would also look great as a metallic eyeshadow on lighter skin tones.

Tips for Getting Oily Skin Under Control

unnamed (3).jpg

Large pores, acne and blemishes, and an all-over shiny appearance are all noticeable signs of oily skin. Your skin’s oil production can increase for a number of reasons, including hormones, change in skin care routine and diet, and even a change in environment. Arizona can be a difficult place for your skin - ranging from extreme dryness in the winter & summer to stifling humidity in the late summer.  When this occurs, help correct the issue by following these tips.

  • Change your skin care. If your skin is showing signs of oiliness, you may want to change your skin care formula to one that specifically targets oiliness and acne. If your oil build-up is only concentrated in the “T” zone area, you may want to switch to the Normal to Oily SeneDerm SkinCare Collection. For those with oiliness all over, the Oily to Acne SkinCare Collection (US only) made with acne-fighting ingredients like salicylic acid will be an ideal option.  You can check out our skin care options on my site HERE.
  • Deep clean pores. Remove deep-seated impurities hidden within pores by applying Detoxifying & Moisturizing Mask 2-3 times a week. Kaolin clay absorbs impurities while volcanic ash gently exfoliates. Soothing green tea and arnica flower helps counteract redness to ensure it does not cause irritation to acne-inflamed skin.
  • Moisturize. When skin is deprived of moisture, your body compensates by producing more oil. Keep skin moisturized by using DayTime Moisturizer and Evening Moisturizer (choosing a formula that best suits your skin type). Add extra hydration without clogging pores by spritzing oil-free Hydrating Facial Serum Mist (I LOVE the smell of this!  So yummy!) anytime throughout the day.
  • Use non-comedogenic cosmetics. Non-comedogenic products are made so that they do not clog pores. MakeSense Color Correcting Tinted Moisturizer and MakeSense Foundations work to hide flaws without clogging pores for clearer skin.
  • Absorb oil with powder. Apply Translucid Powder in Natural to help absorb oil and eliminate shine after applying your makeup. This will help keep oil under control and keep your face looking fresh throughout the day.  If you need a little color in the winter, try the Bronze for some natural glow!

Tips for Matching Foundation

unnamed (6).jpg

Foundation can cover blemishes and discoloration to create an even, flawless base for your makeup look – if done correctly. When done incorrectly, it can actually distract and in some cases, even make your blemishes more noticeable. Ensure that you’re applying foundation the right way by following these handy tips.

Know your undertone. The first step in foundation color matching is determining your undertone. The quickest way to check is to look at your veins. If your veins appear blue or purple, you have a cool undertone. If your veins appear green or olive, you have a warm undertone. If you can’t tell, then you have a neutral undertone. All MakeSense Foundations are noted in the Beauty Book with a “W” for warm, “C” for cool, or “N” for neutral making it convenient to choose the right shade for yourself and for your customer.

Match to your neck. When your face is lighter or darker than your neck, it can be very distracting. That’s why professionals recommend swatching the product from the jawline down to the neck in natural light if possible. If the color seems to disappear, then it’s a great match.

Mix products. If you are in between shades, go with the slightly deeper color and mix it with White Corrective Color Blender to create a custom color that is a perfect match. Also, mixing MakeSense Foundation in Dewy into any shade helps neutralize color if shades are too warm or too cool.

Mind your seasons. Remember that your skin tone may change from one season to another (although your undertone will always remain the same). Since we tend to tan during the summer, choose a “summer” shade to match the change in your tone. Likewise, since we spend less time in the sun during the winter, you will want to choose a different shade in the winter or lighten a shade you already have using White Corrective Color Blender.

How to Wear Bold Colors On Your Eyes

This season, it’s all about adding vibrant hues to eyes – the bolder, the better! And with the launch of the new ShadowSense Tropical Collection, there are plenty of beautiful shades to play with this month! Bright colors elevate your style and make your look more interesting. However, it can be tricky adding color to accent your look without distracting from it. Use these tips below to incorporate this fun and exciting trend into your look this season.

swatch_eye_orange.jpg

Keep bold color on the lower lid. When bright colors are extended too far above the crease, it can look harsh and overpower the entire eye area. Avoid this issue by concentrating color on the lid and use a clean brush to diffuse the color right at the crease to create a blended look. (Lava Shimmer ShadowSense featured on model.)

Wear bold color as eyeliner. A simple way to add a bright pop of color is to line your eyes with it. Crème to powder ShadowSense can be used as eyeliner when applied with a thin-tipped eyeliner brush. Try Palm Glitter ShadowSensefrom the limited edition Tropical Collection for a fun twist on your typical look.

Wear color along the lower lash line. Another easy way to make your usual eye look more exciting is to pair a neutral eye with a bright color along the lower lash line. Try a neutral mauve look on the eyes by applying Moca Java ShadowSense as your base and Garnet ShadowSense to accent the outer V of the eye. Then, add Tropical Orchid Glitter ShadowSense along the lower lash line.

Tap color onto center of the lid. You can also add a pop of color to a neutral eye look by tapping the bold color onto the center of the lid. Try shading lids with Moca Java ShadowSense. Then, tap Lava Shimmer ShadowSense onto the center of the lid and blend the edges.

Wear Mascara. Bold colors can overpower your lashes so applying mascara to them will frame your eyes and make your eyes stand out. Begin by using an eyelash curler to curl your lashes. Follow this step with LashSense Lash Builder to prime and build before applying LashSense Waterproof Mascara for luscious lashes that tie your whole look together.

Though I specifically call out SeneGence products, the techniques discussed are applicable to any brand of product.

Tips for a Beautifully Bronzed Face

Bronzer is designed to help achieve a sun-kissed look any time of the year by adding warm color to places on the face where the sun would naturally hit. Whether you’re using a cream formula like Bronze BlushSense or a powder formula like Bronze Dust Translucid Powder, make sure that you apply bronzer correctly by following these tips!

unnamed (5).jpg

Do not apply bronzer to the entire face. If you want a deeper shade, don’t do it with bronzer (try Self-Tanning Bronzing Coconut Milk instead). If you’re simply trying to add warmth to your face, bronzer should be applied only to areas where the sun would actually hit like the forehead, tip of the nose, chin, and from the temples down to right below the cheekbones.

Choose a color with a warm tone. You can’t add warmth to your face by using a shade that has a cool undertone. Shades with cool undertones (like Moca Java ShadowSense) may create the illusion of shadow instead of adding color to the face. For colors with true warmth, use Bronze BlushSense, Bronze Dust Translucid Powder, or MakeSense® Pearlizer blended into a deeper warm foundation shade.

Build color. Don’t overload your face with bronzer in one go. Instead, build the color up slowly by adding sheer layers at a time. If you apply too much at one time, take a clean SenseCosmetics Stippling Brush and buff away the excess product until the color is blended.

With these simple bronzer tips, you can achieve a gorgeous, sun-kissed glow no matter what season you’re in!

6 Tips for Preventing Workout-Related Breakouts and Skin Issues

While exercise can add a healthy glow to your skin, it can also be a potential trigger for breakouts and other skin irritations. Keep your skin clear by implementing these helpful habits.

Use non-comedogenic makeup

Fooops!Wipes2_170x170.jpg

Keeping your skin clear starts before you even begin to exercise. Regular makeup blocks the pores and prevents most of the sweat from coming out, causing it to build up under the skin. In turn, bacteria grows causing your skin to break out. Instead, invest in non-comedogenic makeup like MakeSense® Original or Advanced Anti-Aging Foundation to keep your skin breathable and your pores clear. For those who prefer to remove their makeup before working out, you can use Fooops!® SenseCosmetics®Color Removing Wipes to quickly remove makeup without stripping moisture from your skin.

Wear loose clothing made from natural fibers

Although spandex and other synthetic materials are common components of trendy workout clothes, opt for natural fibers if you’re prone to breakouts and skin irritations. Look for natural fabrics like hemp or cotton and be sure to take off your sweaty clothes as soon as you can after a workout to avoid accumulating dirt and sweat on your skin. Before putting clean clothes on, jump in the shower to wash away those impurities.

Wipe down gym equipment

While the gym is a great place to get fit and healthy, it can also be a breeding place for bacteria, which, as mentioned previously, can trigger post-workout breakouts. Even if the staff members at your gym regularly wipe down the equipment, it’s best to clean whichever piece of equipment you want to use before you start using it.

Shower after workouts

Acne does not just affect the skin on your face; it also affects your body! Be sure to prevent acne from head to toe by showering after workouts. Use cleansers and body washes that help maintain your skin’s pH balance like SeneDerm 3 in 1 Cleansers and Moisturizing Body Wash. Follow with DayTime Moisturizer and Advanced Hydration Body Lotion to ensure skin is moisturized after your workout.

Exfoliate regularly

Another helpful strategy to keep breakouts at bay is to exfoliate your entire body two to three times each week. Exfoliation will remove dead skin cells that can trap acne-triggering bacteria. Try using the SeneDerm® Smoothing Body Scrub, which contains volcanic ash as a natural exfoliator and soothing, moisturizing ingredients such as shea butter, coconut oil, and aloe leaf juice. However, be sure to avoid scrubbing too roughly to prevent irritation.

Frequently wash gym clothes

Keeping gym clothes and towels freshly laundered is vital to maintaining clear skin. Sweat and dirt build up on workout clothes, so it’s best to put on a clean outfit each time you work out. This is especially important for sports bras and shorts, since two common acne zones are the back and buttocks.

By implementing these strategies into your hygiene routine, you’re well on your way to minimizing acne outbreaks while reaping the benefits of physical exercise.

Brows Two Ways with BrowSense and ShadowSense

The shape of the brows can make a big difference in your overall appearance. They can frame your face and your eyes to make them appear larger or smaller and can change your facial expression. Needless to say, brows are very important and whatever look you create, you’ll want to make sure that it lasts all day! With our range of long-lasting color cosmetics, you can create beautiful smudge-proof brows two ways!

BrowSense_170pxX170px.jpg

BrowSense Liquid Brow Color features a waterproof liquid formula with a thin brush applicator and an enclosed spoolie to apply perfectly defined brows and is available in four natural shades to match your hair. This system is ideal for those with sparse brow hairs as it helps to create natural, hair-like strokes while adding definition to the shape. (Dark BrowSense Liquid Brow Color on model on the left.)

Here’s how to apply BrowSense in just a few easy steps:

1. Outline the upper arch starting from the mid-point of the brow by creating hair-like strokes towards the tail end of the brow.
2. Place the applicator at the front of the brow where the lowest hairs sit and flick the applicator upwards to create fine, hair-like strokes.
3. Fill in spaces where hairs are sparse.
4. Brush through hairs to disperse product using the attached spoolie.

Another way to fill brows is by using ShadowSense Matte Eyeshadows. Its crème to powder formula makes it easy to apply and dries down to a smudge-proof matte finish. Depending on your hair color, you will want to choose the color that suits you best or mix shades together to create a perfect match.

Garnet ShadowSense has a mahogany color and is great for brunettes who have a slight red tone in their hair. Smoked Topaz has a deep grey-brown shade which works well for those with ash-brown hair. Onyx can be mixed in to deepen the shade for those with dark hair while Moca Java works to lighten any shade for those with a lighter hair color. (Garnet ShadowSense mixed with Smoked Topaz ShadowSense on model below.)

ShadowSense_Brow.jpg

To apply ShadowSense, you’ll need a flat angled brush and a spoolie or brow brush. Once you’ve mixed the perfect shade to match your brows, here’s what you’ll need to do to achieve perfectly shaped brows using ShadowSense:

1. Outline the upper arch starting from the mid-point of the brow, extending to the tail end.
2. Beginning from a quarter of the way in from the brow, outline the lower part of the brow.
3. Fill in sparse areas creating hair-like strokes in the same direction of the hairs.
4. Angle your brush vertically and flick the applicator upwards to create fine, hair-like strokes at front of the brow.
5. Brush through hairs to disperse product using a spoolie or a brow brush.
